AUCKLAND, July 2. Tho output of hemp for the last six months as indicated by tho quantity passing through the local grading stores shows a great falling-off, particularly for tho last quarter. The figures for the six months were 3039 tons, as against 0335 tons for the corresponding period of last year. NAPIER. July 2. A Past Grands’ Lodge of the Manchester Unity of the Independent Order of Oddfellows was formed in Napier to-night, with a membership of twenty-seven. WELLINGTON, July 2. The hearing was commenced at the Supremo Court to-duv of an action in which -Edward Joim Searl claims £IOOO from Thomas Patrick Lyons, a former partner, for slander. iSearl says Lyons charged him with blackmail ami with robbery in taking moneys belonging to the partnership and not accounting for suite. The evidence was not concluded when the Court rose for the day. For over two hours this the Harbor Board, with closed doors, discussed tho report submitted by the committee which had been appointed to negotiate for the acquisition of the .patent slip. On resuming iii open .Board the chairman (Mr. T. M. Wilford, -M.!>.) stated that the conferences with the Slip Company had not up to the present resulted* in any agreement. The committee was authorised to re-open negotiations with the Company and report to the Board within a week. PALMERSTON N.. July 2. Lady Blanket addressed a- large mooting of townspeople to-day regarding the formation of a Palmerston branch of tho Blanket Nurse Society. His Excellency Lord l’lindict also addressed tho meeting, which was presided over bv the Mayor, Mr. Nash. .Several representatives of the medical profession spoke, also Rev. Harper, vicar of All Saints’-. It was finally resolved to form the branch, a large number of those present enrolling as members. NELSON, July 2. At Hie Supreme Court to-day, Georgo Bland was found guilty of the theft of'money from an hotel at Motueka, and was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. A lad of 10 years of age, charged with carnally knowing a girl over 12 and under Hi. pleaded guilty, and was ordered to como up for sentence when called upon, his father being required to enter into recognisances for the hoy’s future good behavior. The criminal session is now concluded. CHRISTCHURCH, July 2.
Messrs IV. Minson and J. G. Adams, president and vice-president respectively of tho Home Industries Committee of the Now Zealand International Exhibition, met yesterday and finally fix up matters standing over in connection with tho committee’s work. The records of the committee are to 1m forwarded to tho Government to-day. . Mr. Minson-lias on hand still unclaimed some of the prizes allotted, as well as some of tilio exhibits. Although claimants have been advertised for several times they have not been forthcoming. and tho prizes and exhibits are to bo held by Mr. Minson until they are claimed. Henry James Lilloy and Robert Crawford, who pleaded guilty to various charges of thefts from warehouses, appeared for sentence before .Mr. Justice Denniston to-day, and were sented to nine months’ imprisonment each.
Kubelik gave his first concert tonight in the new Theatre Royal, the building being crowded and the audience most enthusiastic. DUNEDIN, July 2.
At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, Mr. O’Callaghau, Clerk of tho Court, who is leaving on three months leave prior to retiring on superannuation, was met by the Bench and the Bar. After serving in the navy and the Maori war, Mr. O’Callaghan spent 37 years in the Justice Department. Messrs Widdowson and Graham (Magistrates), Finch, and the President of the Law Society referred to Mr. O’C'allaghnn’s long and honorable service, and paid a. tribute to him for his unfailing courtesy and efficiency. Subsequently Mr. O’C.illaghan was presented with a gold watch on behalf of the legal profession, and with an armchair on behalf of the Magistrates, staff of Court, police, and other branches of the Justice Department.
At the City Police; Court to-d iy, Roljt. McKenzie pleaded guilty to charges of obtaining £1 from Donald Reid and Co. and £1 from Stronach, Morris and Co., both stock and station agents, by false pretences, and with attempting to obtain £1- from F. Mollison by similar means. The evidence showed that accused, who represented himself as a farmer, rang up the persona named and asked them to advance money to an employee to enable him to return home, subsequently proceeding to the firm's place of business and representing himself as the employee. Accused was committed for sentence. INVERCARGILL, July 2. The five week's old child of David Lamont, a carpenter, of Alvross Bush, met its death yesterday morning, probably as the result of overlaying. The father states that the child was all right on Wednesday night, but at 2.30 o’clock in the morning had a blackened appearance, and found to be dead. Some anxiety is being felt for the safety of a fisherman known as Harry (a German), who left Pegasus nine or ten days ago, and lias not been heard of since. Ho had been living with two other fishermen in a teijt. and wis left sitting up one night when the others went to rest. In the morning Harrv was gone, and tracks idioated that ho 'had gone towards the Remarkables on his way to Paterson’s Inlet or Half-moon Biy. A. Galt, while putting a belt on a pulley at the sawmill at One Tree Point-to-day was caught by the sleeve hut managed to free himself bv teiring off his clothing, hut not before lie had sustained a nasty squeeze above the chest.
