An Arab named Moliacd Cher iff was charged -before Mr. Riddell, 3.M., to-day with disobeying tlie lawful commands of tlio captain of the Glasgow ship Renfield, which arrived in Wellington on Wednesday from Liverpool. It was stated that he had refused duty and threatened violence to the captain, cook, and officers, and endangered tho safety of tlio ship. Accused made a rambling statement denying tlio allegations. Sydney Herbert, n seaman, John Williams, and two others gave evidence for 1 the defence. Williams also complained about tlio provisions. His Worship said the crew was evidently not a happy family. Ho fined Clieriff 40s, with £1 8s costs, in default seven days’ imprisonment. To-night Mr. T. -M. .Cunningham, who lias held the position of Town Clerk for 22 years, tendered his resignation owing to failing health. Tlie Mayor and Councillors spoke -in high terms of the services rendered by Mr. Cunningham to the Council and to tlio community. The resignation is to date from January Ist next, but ■an effort will bo made to relieve the Town Clerk of his duties three months earlier. DUNEDIN, June 26. At Balclutba to-day tlie premises occupied by George Fisher, hoardinghouse keeper, were raided by the police. In .si, well under tho lloor of a chaff-house 56 bottles of whisky wore found. A prosecution will probably follow. INVERCARGILL, June 26. The Bluff Harbor Board decided to-day to make additional extensions to tlio wharfage accommodation, giving in all about 1800 ft of berthage, sufficient to admit of two Homegoing and two intercolonial steamers being -berthed at the - wharf -at one time. The total- cos-t of all the extensions will be -about £IO,OOO.
