INTER-ISLAND MATCH.

NORTHERNERS VICTORIOUS

[Press Association.]

WELLINGTON, Juue 24. / The wet ground spoiled tho North v. South Island match. It did not rain during the game, but tlio Athletic Park was thoroughly .sodden, and line play was out of the question. On paper the Northern team looked greatly superior, but the Southerners effected ii. surprise early in the gamo by scoring a clever ti.y after some good passing, from which Hamilton kicked a- goal. After this they had all the worst of it, but their forwards played vory well, and repeatedly swept their opponents before them, but the passing, which at any time was difficult, was ineffective on the Southern sicle. Tlio short, nipping passes of Hunter, Roberts, and co. were much more suited to the ground, and the Northern backs were often threatening, and sometimes siicessful. Mitciiinson scored after a piece of well-judged work by Cameron, and just at the end of the first spoil these two and Hunter put in some passing of the best description, and Cameron scored. No goals were kicked. In tho second half tlio Southern forwards played up strongly, and frequently were on the Northern goal line, but never could score. TV lienover the ball went in the other direction the strong and experienced hacks who were in tlio Northern rear rank immediately, made the game as open as they could, and both Mitchinsoii and Coleman.crossed the line, while many other attempts only just missed. The Southerners were saved repeatedly by the ball slipping about, so that non© could grasp it. No goals were kicked, and tho game ended ;

North Island 12 ' South Island 5 Oil a dry ground, however, the. difference would have been much greater. Tbevo, were about 3000 people present, including most of tlio. English team. The only change made in tlio sides w'as that Thomson being unable to- play for tlio North Island. Wallace went three-quarter, and O’Leary, of Wairarapa, came in as full-back. At the olid both teams wero so covered with mud that they were literally "all blacks.” The game was,most unpunctual in starting, and though no interval was taken, finished in the dark, with-the players indistinguishable from one another. A WEST COAST LAMENT. [Press Association.] WESTPORT, Juno 24. Exception is being taken here to the football match at Wellington being styled the North Island v. South Island, instead of North Island versus the East Coast of the South Island, as the West Coast had not been considered in the selection.

INTER-VARSITY MATCH. [Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, June 24. The annual match between Otago University and Canterbury College was played -at Lancaster Park this aftornoon on a greasy'ground, .Otago winning by 21 to 3.

AUCKLAND AFFAIRS. [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, June 2-L The Auckland Orphans’ Club lias invited the (British footballers and the New Zealand representative team to be present at a function to be held on the evening of Saturday, July 25th. At a meeting of the Auckland Rugby Union to-night a letter was read from the secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union in respect to the protest of the Rotorua Union against the match at- Rotorua- being arranged by an iinaffiliated body. -Members took exception to the remarks in the letter, and considered that the New Zealand Union had forwarded a weak reply. The reference in the letter to the New Zealand Union having no desire to participate in the gate was considered peculiar, in view of the expense of entertaining the team at Rotorua’, and allowing tlie whole of the profits to go to an outside body. A resolution was carried to the effect that the Auckland Rugby Union strongly emphasises their former protest against the New Zealand Rugby Union (ignoring the claim of the Rotorua Union to control the match.
