A HINT .EOH POLITICAL CANDIDATES. Tlio Wellington. “Evening Post” ■liag found virtue in ono of tlie new aspirants for political honors who intends to contest tho Hutt seat at the coming elections. - The. gentleman in question is Mr; R. W. -Short, who,; in his preliminary speech at Petono the other night, criticised the present administration. After quoting figures to prove .New Zealand to he the mo6t heavily-taxed of all the Australasian colonies, and acknowledging tho value of tho relief which tho Government gave through- tho amendment of tho tariff last year, Mr. Short proceeded to argue thqt “thero must be something wrong somewhere,” and to find it in extravagant administration. “To got general relief,” ho -urged, “tho country must have a reduction of tho cost of administration.” AVo should be glad indeed (comments our contemporary) to see this point taken up by so overwhelming a majority of candidates as to insure that Government and Parliament would bo compelled to give it effective attention after the general election. The fair words and -good intentions of tho present Ministry at the beginning of its term of office created a general impression that the sorely-needed era of economy had arrived; but its performance has not kept pace with its promise. Some small economies have been effected, and as we pointed out a few days ago, a considerable economy has been effected in one. department —that of defenbe —where tho very existence of' this Dominion as a free, white community cannot bo guaranteed without a far'more liberal and more wisely-directed expenditure. But, in general, the other way. •tlio' tendency is all The\ild extravagaij- ••• X. • -
