Geo. Smith, better known as Robt. McCarthy, an indeterminate sentence prisoner with a bad record, who has been in gaol almost continuously for the last six years for breaking, entering and theft, succeeded in opening two doors of his cell in the solitary confinement section of the gaol, but was discovered by a warder. / A rope made by McCarthy from , a blanket and a shirt was found in the cell ol Allntulale, another notorious criminal. McCarthy has escaped custody on three previous occasions. On this occasion lie tore up tho flooring boards and prized the doors open. He had, however, no hope of escaping, as the yard walls' are So feet high. He is being closely watched.
