SMART THIEVES. ~ A V, establishment at Marseilles of tlio Credit Lyonnais rvas robbed in a very audacious manner recently (says , t J le Telegraph”), and more than £12,000 carried oft from tlie safe. Business was over, and an attendant was standing at the half-opened doors when a well-dressed man appeared with a request for letters of credit for Russia. Ihe attendant explained that he could do nothing, but tlio stranger engaging m conversation with him drew liiiii inside the hall, and presently three individuals ‘came in, vanned and hound him, and then set to work to force the door of the safe by means of an acetylene lamp. They had nearly succeeded when a friend of the attendant entered to fetch him, and, noticing the smoke caused bv the amp, was quietly told that fife had broken out, and that he had better iun off and inform the pompiers. Ten mnnites later, when lie returned with the firemen, tlie party had disappeared with their booty. The unlucky attendant was discovered in a dark corner, still gagged and bound, and as soon as he was freed ho related bis adventuro, but the four robbers had by that time got clear away, and have not been heard pf eiuco.
