The weather was nil that could be desired for tlio British aiul West Coast football match to-day. Iho attend‘inco wus about 0000, and tho ground, although a littlo soft, was m good condition ■ The visitors won the toss, and played with a southerly wind in their favor, wluch was a great advantage. The gnmo was mado fast from the start, bub the Coast forwards wore quick in spoiling tho opposing backs After ten minutes’ play the Coast, was penalised for being off-side, and Gibbs, by an oxcelloiit kick, landed a goal from half-way. Britain 3, Coast nil. The Coast- men were continually penalised for offside and illegal tackling, and several attempts at goal failed. Illegal tackling by Colvin gave the Britishers a free-kick in front of the goal, and Gibbs placed a pretty goal. Britain 6, Coast nil. Tho Coast backs were playing badly, nnd repeatedly knocking on. but MeKay, the Coast full-back, played splendidly. McEvedy mado a splendid run, and passing to Kyrlco near tho line, the latter scored, and Gibbs converted. Britain 11, Coast nil. AV. Morgan, a British half, retired through an injury to his leg. The Coast wore repeatedly penalised, and the roferee camo in for some hostile criticism, tho. crowd hooting. Half-time ended: Britain 11, Coast nil. Oil resuming, Morgan again took tho field, anti the Coast made' play willing, but tho backs passed wildly. Gibbs, after a fine dashing run, crossed the line, but failed to register the extra points. Britain 14, Coast nil. The Coast made desperate efforts to score, but- only tho fine play of Jackett prevented them. The C-oast was--securing a.fair share of the ball from tho serums, hut tho half seemed content- to work the. blind side. McEvod.y, from a scrum, secured the ball and made a splendid run, only being stopped by McKay at full-back. A fine passing rush between Morgan, Davey, McEvedy, and Gibbs, nnd then to McEvedy saw the latter; score behind the posts. Gibbs missed tlie kick at goal. Britain 17, Coast nil. From a scrum Green passed to Jackson, who rushed over and grounded the leather between tho posts Britain 22, .Coast nil. From a lino-out- the Coast forwards carried tho ball into British territory, and Colvin receiving a- pass dashed over. Bennett failed at goal. Britain 22, Coast 3. From this out no-further score.resulted. The game was somewhat- disappointing, the back play of tlio British team not being up to anticipations. The gate realised £450. Tho British team, left at ':7 o’clock overland for Nelson.

It has been decided by the local Rugby Union that Canterbury shall play Wellington on August- ’ 29th, Otago on September oth, and Southland on September 12th. MAORI TEAM SCORES A WIN. United Press Association—Copyright (Received June 17, 7.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 17. Tho Maori team defeated a Metropolitan team by 23 to 20. (Received June 17, 9.15 p.m.) There was an attendance of 5000 at the match. Tho Maoris showed a decided advancement in playing tho new game. A feature of the game was the improved performance of the three-quarters, Asher, Pouwhiuwhiu, aml'Tuki. Among the forwards Pita Tapihana was the most prominent. Tlio game was very even throughout, tho local side attacking strongly at the close. Messenger’s goals included a remarkably line one from half-way. Asher,- in evading a tackle, jumped clean over a player. Early in the game Rota sustained a fractured jaw.
