The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 1908. THE MAYOR AND MR. JICKELL.

'L’ho extraordinary aberration of mind which appears to hard afflicted our new Mayor in regard to the engagement of IM-r. Jickell to report upon local drainage mutters has led him to -lengtliß which cause, one to wonder what he will do next. Having failed utterly to establish a reputation -for Air. Jickell as a sanitary engineer by the issuing of a series of miscellaneous telegrams, hurriedly sent to various individuals who might or might not bo in a position to judge, •ho next -turned his attention to Air. Ale-stayer, and last night read the replies to some telegrams which -lie bid sent with reference fo the latter gentleman’s qualifications. Fortunately for Air. Alestayer, his professional reputation does not rest upoja, the- verdict of the Mayors of either Nelson or Fielding, and, in any case, the Council was quite justified in refusing to receive the -telegrams -read by tlio Mayor. iTlow -His AYorship hoped to get out of his present difficulties by seeking to disparage Air. Alestayer. .is not given -to us to fathom. He has -persisted in direct defiance of the Council in engaging Air. Jickell, and under the circumstances the only logical outcome appears to he that he shall- pty the bill himself and Jook a.s pleasant as possible under the circumstance. AYe could have wished that the Alayor’s ‘honorarium; could have been oxpended in a better cause.
