The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 1908. ADVERTISING THE DOMINION.

The information published in 'another column concerning the work that lias boon undertaken in England by the Neiv;. Zealand Shipping Company in tho direction of advertising the Dominion as an attractive- place for immigrants should ho read with satisfaction by all who realise how greatly itliis country is -in need of a bigger population. In this matter a firm 'whoso interests have ever been directly bound up with those ol the Dominion haft-set an example in busiucss enterprise 'that..might with advantage be emulated by many others, and at the’ same time it is iponl'oranjng a work of inestimable benefit to New Zealand. It may not be generally known, yet it is nevertheless a fact, that the steamship and railway companies of Canada have on similar lines played a very important part in tho building up of tho new Canadian nation, whilst tho big railway firms of biio United States spend annually hundreds of thousands of pounds in advertising the attractions of different portions of the country with a view to inducing travel. Patriotic organisations in tho different centres co-oporato in the movement to bring population to their particular territory, and so tho people are shifted about, tho country gets doveloped, and tho railway companies get a share of tho revenue thus circulated. The New Zealand Shipping Company is not a phila-nthropio institution, and naturally anticipates that a goodly proportion of thoso who make the voyage to this country will travel on their steamers, thus giving somo return for their advertising expenses, yet this fact need not hinder us from congratulating tho directors upon their enterprising policy, and wishing them every success in its continuance. 'lf there were an organisation in oxistenco representing Gisborne business interests, it might do a good deal worse than send somo views of this town and district to he included in the series which tho Shipping Company’s agents reproduce at their various lectures. In such manner we might reasonably expect that a share of immigrants who journey to New Zealand would direct their steps to this part of the Dominion.
