Press Association. NAP-lEIR, June 12. A public meeting was held this afternoon in connection with the formation in Napier of a branch of the Soicety for 'promoting the health of women and children. The Mayor (Mr. J. Vigor Brown) presided, and there was a large attendance of ladies. Representatives of the medical profession were also present, and the Governor and Lady Plunket attended. Lady Plunket read a paper on tho objects of the . Society, and Lord Plunket was one of the speakers. Among the contributions received towards tile work of the Society was one of £IOO from Mr. J. Vigor Brown, and one of £SO from Mr. E. W. Knowles. His Excellency, on behalf of Lady Plunket and the Society, thanked the ’Napier people for the sympathy they had shown with the movement.

NEW PLYMOUTH, June 12. At the Crown Lands Office to-day, a ballot was conducted for nineteen sections, totalling 14,747 acres of Crown land in the Otunui block, between Tauwaranui and Mangaroa. The land was offered under renewal lease terms, 66 years with perpetual rights of renewal, in successive terms of 66 years. From three to nineteen applications were received for each section, all but five being taken up at the ballot, and these were applied for during the afternoon. WELLINGTON, June 12. ■The following is Captain Edwin’s forecast to sp.m. to-morrow: Southerly heavy gale southward of Queenstown and Oamaru, but northerly heavy gale elsewhere. Rain is probable in all parts of the country, with falling barometer, but it will be rising in southernmost districts after midnight. At the Supreme Court James Nicliolls, a quarryman, sued the City Councillor £250 damages for injuries in a tram accident. It was alleged that owing to the negligence of the corporation’s employees in permitting tho car to be overcrowded, and the motorman suddenly and negligently turning on the full motive .power causing the car to violently and suddenly jerk, plaintiff was thrown from the tram and injured. He suffered further injury after being thrown out by reason of the corporation’s employees not promptly stopping the car. The jury returned a verdict for tho City Council, and judgment was entered accordingly with costs. The chemists conference closed today. A deputation will wait on the Hon. G. Fowlds to-morrow to discuss matters dealt with at the conference. CHHfLSTOH UK OH, ; J une 12.

•The Hon. R. McNaib, Minister of Linds, passed' through Christchurch to-day on his way to Ashburton,where he will attend the Ashburton winter show. To-morrow the Minister will proceed to Gore. On Tuesday he will attend the Southland Show, and on Wednesday and Thursday he will visit that portion of his electorate which is being merged in the Clutha electorate. He will address a meeting of his constituents on Friday at Mataura, and on the following day will pass through Christchurch on his way back to Wellington

Mr. Ernest Short, our well-known Romney sheep-breeder, decided today to present from his flock eighty stud Shropshire Down sheep to the Government for the AA’averley experimental farm. This gift is worth nearly a thousand pounds. DUNEDIN, June 12. At an extraordinary general meeting of the New Zealand Paper-mills Co., Ltd., to-day, Mr. W. F. Edmond was elected director on the Dunedin hoard and Messrs Sculling and J. H. Upton were elected to the Auckland board.

An extraordinary general meeting of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co. was held to-day to consider a proposal to increase, tlie-nominal ca.pitil of the company to £IOO,OOO by the creation of 60,000 new shares, reserving 20,000 against unseen but possible future developments, and issuing 40,000 at present. The object of increasing the capital is to make additions and alterations to plant and machinery, to increase the output, and to place the finances on an easy footing. It was decided to increase the capital as recommended. Shares will carry a dividend according to the amount paid lip.
