THE NOXIOUS WEEDS ACT.

GOVERNMENT’S ACTION DENOUNCED. Press Association. AUCKLAND. June 11. Tlie sins of tho Government in re-n-ard to the non-observance of tilie Noxious Weeds Apt, which is so- rigidly enforced against private individuals in certain cases, were loudly denounced by the delegates from the local bodies when assembled in conference to-day. Some of the speakers said that in many instances blackberries and other noxious weeds, which the settlers were called upon to clear, had spread from the Governments own railway line, and tho ciso was cited by the Chairman (Mr. Allen) of one settler who bad dug a trench alongside the railway line to keep out the blackberries, biit without avail: IAIr. Massey, M.P., said that not -long ago several settlers hud boon fined at P-ukokohe for failing to clear their.land of blackberries, whilst at tbo same time thore were blackberries growing in the Courthouse enclosure. Mr. B. Andrew referred to tho growth of blackberries on the footpath a-t Bukekohe, which he said tore ladies’ dresses as they passed. -He spoke to a policeman on the subject, but that astute guardian of the peace acknowledged no responsibility. He next appealed to Mr. Northcroft, S.M., with scarcely any greater satisfaction, his reply being, “Go to King Edward; they are his blackberries.” (Laughter.)
