ENTERTAINMENTS.

“THE £aRL AND THE GIRL.” - His Majesty’s Theatre was crowded again last evening when Messrs W. Anderson and John F. Sheridan’s P mtomime Company staged the musical comedy “The Earl and the Girl.” The plot of the piece is very light and humorous, and tells of how an Earl is lost, libw he is impersonated bv a coster named Jim 011007.6. Ihov the Earl is found, and all ends as all musical comidies end—happily. The fun of the play is fast and furious, the dialogue crisp and well constructed, the incidental songs appropriate and catchy.’ The scenes afford scope for some smart frocking for the ladies. some gorgeous dresses for the ballets, and handsome costumes for the male characters.

Mr. Sheridan was thoroughly at home in the character of Jim'Olieeze, a coster dog trainer, his absurd impersonation of the Earl, causing roar upon roar of .laughter. Miss Hobi Barlow was equally successful as Liza Shodiliam. his sweetheart, and sang with good voice “Won’t you come hack to Bom Bombay,” ' and “He never oven said good-bye.” Messrs Wilson and Morris as j’oc and Alf, two costers, performed some clever tumbling and knoek-about acrobatics, and tlieir work was greatly appreciated. The other characters also filled tlieir parts well. The Company left for Napief bv the M.oana last evening, hut will return to Gishorne In September next, when Mr. iSboridan will present three musical plays that are new to Gisborao.
