Four sergeants and four bombardiers have been courtmartialled at Berlin for having ill-treated soldiers. There were GOO cases against Sergeant Thnmme and 30 against Sergeant Seluiaz. In one ease a soldier committed suicide owing to Thamme’s cruelty. Others were daily Hogged, whipped, or belabored with fists, straps, and- sticks. Recruits were coinpeifed to run the gauntlet of soldiers armed with rods. Tliamme was sentenoed to 15 months’ imprisonment, and reduction to-the ranks, and tlie others to terms-not exceeding three months.
