Loading operations were completed on the s.s. Athenie last night, and it was expected that she would got away for South at an early hour tlii* morning. Messrs Richardson and Co.’s Fanny arrived from Napier about midday yesterday with general cargo. On her way up she picked up two Government otficials from Portland Island, who returned to Napier when tho vessel sailed last night. The scow IJangi completed her discharge on Wednesday night, and sailed for Tairua yesterday morning. She loads logs at tho latter port for Auckland. The U.S.S. Co.’s Mokoia arrives from South to-morrow morning, and continues her voyage to Auckland and Sydney. The U.S.S. Co.’s Alonowai returns from Auckland on Sunday aFternoon, and sails South at night. The U.ia.S. Co.’s Squall is due to leave Auckland to-morrow afternoon for Tologa Bay and Gisborne. The steamer African Monarch ha 6 ben chartered to load coal at Newcastle for the west coast of South America. A romarkable salvaging achievement was referred to at the annual meeting of the Liverpoo-PSalvago Association ;is having been carried out during the past year. Tho case cited was that of the steamer Veronese, which, with a valuable cargo on. ooard, sank in consequence of a 'hole in her bow. Instead of discharging part of the cargo and patching tho vessel from the inside, divers took the measure of the damage below water. A steel patch was made on board the Ranger, the salvage steamer, and divers, working with pneumatic tools on a platform 28ft below water, drilled the necessary holes in tho ship. The plate was then, sent down and fitted and fixed by patent bolts invented by the association’s surveyor, and the ship' was brought back to Liverpool, through the Bay of Biscay, in variable weather, without any further trouble. The Union Castle steamer Newark Castle, which ran ashore" near Burban, has been sold by auction for tho benefit of all concerned. Tho total sum received for both ship and cargo was only £575. The Newark Castle was of 6242 tons gross register (says the “Standard”), and: at the time she struck was valued at £85,000 ,in addition to the valuable cargo. According to,the London correspondent of the Cunarders. Lusitania and'Mauretania, have been a disappointment to their owners. Their speed, it is said, has not averaged anything like what was expected, and it mav be doubted if, in comparison with smaller and less costly vessels, they are really worth the money spent on them. It is known, adds the same authority, that the Admiralty is not yet satisfied that these vessels have come up to tho standard specified.
