“ INDUSTRIES WEEK.”

MANUFACTURERS’ ENTHUSIASM FINE DISPLAYS. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 4. Tho Now Zealand industries week, promoted by tho Canterbury Industrial Association, which project has been taken up enthusiastically, ■ not only in Christchurch, but also m AVellington and Auckland, opened this morning with a number of fine displays of Now Zealand-made goods exhibited in prominent shop windows throughout the city ancl suburbs. M WELLINGTON,: Juno _4. Tho schomo to display Dominion manufactures in the shop windows was taken up well in AVeliingt-on, and the cards, “Made in Now Zealand,” were prominent in most of tho shops. Some of the displays, particularly of blankets, rugs, and woollen goods of various kinds, are excellent, while in other branches of industry goods are shown in profusion and variety quite surprising to many people. It is expected that the exhibition will lia.vo a good effect, both in demonstrating to the public tho quality of articles made in tho country and in promoting a patriotic spirit that will encourage local manufactuie. (Special to “Times.”)

A great deal of interest is being taken in the shop Windows to-day because of the very excellent displays of local industries that are on view. A’cry fine displays are made by the ICaiapoi, Mosgiel, and Petone Woollen Mills, the Gear and Christchurch Meat Companies, and Messrs Alcoelc and Co.

Tlio “Post,” referring to the general scheme, says that “by a queer trick of fate Dunedin, which of all the cities most needs a filip, is in isolation. The southern city stood still between 1901 and 1906, and is now merely a spectator of tlio northern centres of activity. The explanation may be that Dunedin has no industrial association. It did have such a society one, hut it died when tho employers association was born. Tho disappearance of the industrial association is regrettable, because such an organisation, though necessarily some of its functions are identical with those of an employers association, has others which are totally different. Probably, however, next yoar may find Dunedin in another 'and better rnood.”

In one window a weaving maefiTno is at work, and*all day long there has been a crowd of curious onlookers around tho window. Furniture makers, jewellers, hatters, chemists, and others have their New Zealand-made goods on show, There are cheap fares from the country to-morrow to enable tho visitors to see tho show.
