The U.S.S. Co.’s Squall arrived from Tologa [lay and Auckland yestenlav afternoon. Owing to having explosives on hoard she was unable to come alongside the wharf, hut will do so this morning. The Huddart-Parker Co.’s Wnnmera arrives from Auckland to-morrow afternoon, and sails later for Smith. The Shaw, iSavill and Albion Co. s Athenic arrived yesterday morning to loul for London. She takes about 85,000 carcases of frozen mutton and 400 bales of wool from this port, and Is expected to sail for Napier on Thursday or Friday. . . It is understood that negotiations are proceeding between Messrs Holyman and Son, of Launceston, Insmanin, and Messrs Richardson and Co., of Napier, with a view to the purchase of the well-known steamer Toroa, owned by the latter company. The Union Company are acting on behalf of Messrs Holyman and Son, who arc about to purchase a steamer to replace their steamer Orion, which is believed to have been lost at sea with all hands recently during a trip from the north-w est coast of Tasmania to Melbourne. As a result of the, recent fire on the Shaw, Savill. and Albion Co.’s steamer lonic, tho following cargo w as discharged (approximately)2v .000 carcases frozen meat, 30 cases meal extract, 1900 bales hemp, 813 bales wool, 337 sacks peas, 150 cases cheese, CS casks pelts and fallow, and GO tons general cargo. All the moat was taken out of the freezing chamber in No. 2 hold, and was taken to the Nga•liauvanga freezing works, where it is going re-conditioned. The- damaged meat is to be boiled down. Mr. Ward, who has been chief engineer of the steamer Maitai during the past seven years, went ashore on sick leave at Melbourne, owing to on of his legs being paralysed. His place was temporarily filled by Mr. Hoopor. Mr. John Hownrth, late relieving chief engineer of the Wliangape, has now joined the Maitai as chief, and Mr. H. Swan, who has been on holiday leave, has-'rejoined the/Wbangape 03 chief. Mr. J. (Vilvy. the builder’s guarantee engineer, of tho Koromiko, is returning to England by the lonic. His successor is Mr. A. A. Grant, late chief engineer of the Tavinni.
As a result of the recent negotiations, the Union Company lias pur ? chasedthe iron barque 'Loch Lomond’, and it is understood sho will be converted into a coal hulk at one of the chief ports of call for the Ited Funnel stoarivers.. The vessel was built at Glasgow in 1870, and her tonnage is 1249.
The brigantine Aratapu, with cargo for Kaipara, has been detained for over a week in the stream at Lvttelton through being unable to obtain a second mate. The case is an instance of the hardship resulting from tlio clause of the Shipping and iSeamon’e Act roqnniring vessels over ioo tons register, going voyages of over 300 miles, to carry two mates. It is almost- impossible to obtain second mates for small coasting sailers, .and there is no provision in the Act for a temporary permit to allow vessels Jo leave with a leading seaman in place of a second mate under exceptional circumstances.
