THE ENTENTE CORDIALE.

A WARM UNDERSTANDING.

COMMENTS OF ENGLISH NEWS-

PAPERS

United Press Association —Copyright LONDON, May 28.

M. Pichou, the French Minister of Foregn Affairs, had a long interview .with Sir Edward Grey, the British Minister, and a complete agreement was established on all questions. The “Daily News” said it would regard a specific alliance as a disaster for European peace, even .if the Republic proved more accommodating tliaii “Le Temps,” and did not insist on our substituting conscription for our voluntary army. Tho “Daily Telegraph” says whatever the future may bring forth, for the present the entente will suffice. The “Morning Post” says-the question of whether friendship should culminate in a partnership must hot bo treated lightly or hurriedly.. . The “Chronicle” says the cordial understanding may become an alliance, but there is no occasion to lorcc the pace or anticipate the future. Mr. Lloycl-George has instituted a Government fund, for affording hospitality to foreign visitors. Referring to speculations intrench newspapers, the “Times” remarks that the King and Queen a visit to Russia has helped to foster ail illusion that M. Fallieros’ visit to London is likely to be followed by some great development in - international affairs. The “Times” thinks such speculations wholly out of place. While Britain will adhere to the spirit- and letter ot the entente unflinchingly, the limes” fails to see any grounds ot sound policy for endeavoring at the presentto give it a wider scope or more formal character. Such efforts would defeat their own object, and cause misconception.
