THE PROBLEM OF LIFE.
HALF-A-CROWN WELL USED.
A PITIFUL CASE,
(.Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, May 26
The problem of how. to live on lialf-a-crown a week is being solved by a young man, tho adopted son of an old lady. This’ young man made a most favorable impression on the Trustees of the Benevolent Institution this afternoon. “Wliat have you coming in? asked the chairman (Rev. W. A. Evans) of tlio applicant. “Two pounds a month. That s mother’s pension,” was the reply. “Wliat do you pay for rent?’ was the next question. “Seven and six, sir,” replied the applicant. “We live oil half-a-crown a week.” Tho Trustees found, on close investigation, that' the young mail’s story was accurate in every particular, and that lie was living with his mother in a house that was damp, dark, and wretched and that ought to bo condemned. It was stated at the Board meeting that the applicant was a victim to rheumatics, for which he was bein" treated at the hospital as an out-patient. The Board decided to continue rations and to make a rent allowance in order that the young •man and his mother might move into healthier quarters.
