The New Zealand Loan, and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., report having received the following cablegram from their London office: Sales gain firmness as they progress. As compared with last sales’ closing rates, prices are about 5 per cent, lower for crossbred lambs, greasy merino super and greasy crossbred; about 5 per cent, to 7.1 per cent, lower for scoured merino super; about 10 to 15 per cent, lower for crossbred slipe.
HIGH COMMISSIONER’S RETORT WELLINGTON, May 18. Tlie High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, May 10, states: “Tlie mutton market is dull, except for prime- light-weight Canterbury brands which are getting very scarce, with a brisk demand. Canterbury mutton 4d, North Island 3jjd. There was a good demand for prime quality Jamb, but there'are complaints with regard to the quality of New Zealand brands this season. There is a dull sale lor all lamb of inferior quality; Canterbury SRI, other than Canterbury ssd. The beef market is weak. New Zealand beef, is being pushed for sale, hindquarters being quoted at 32d, forequarters 3d. The butter market is quiet, with a tendency in favor of buyers. European supplies are increasing. Choicest New Zealand 110 s, Danish Ills, Australian 104 s, and Siberian 104 s per cwt. Tlie cheese market. is quiet, and small business doing. Prices are irregular; white makes 595, colored 58s per cwt. The hemp market is very quiet, with nothing doing, and the prospects are uncertrmu The following are quotations: Good fair grade, on spot, £25 10s; fair grade, on spot, £24 10s; fair current Manila £24 10s. May to July shipments are quoted as follows: Good fair grade £25 15s, fair grade £24 10s, fair current Manila £24 10s. There is no alteration in the cocksfoot seed market since last week. The wool market has recovered, and values are equal to tho closing rates of last, sale.”
' LONDON WOOL SALES. LONDON, May 17. At tlie wool 'sales there was animated competition, tho market being very linn. To date 44,937 bales have been catalogued, and 34,518 sold.
