DRUNKENNESS

Two lir«t offenders wore fined ss, in default, 21 hours imprisonment lor being drunk oil Saturday last. George Fraser, who did not appear, was lined IBs with ousts 2s lor a similar offence. James MeConville, defended by Mr Blair, pleaded guilty to being drunk and with procuring liquor during thu currency of a prohibition order. Mr Blair said the accused had withstood toniptation for seven mouth:; and he asked that the fact be taken into consideration. The Magistrate said it was usclcsr, to niaklo prohibitioji orders unless they were to be obeyed,'and lined accused as on the first charge and To on the second charge.’ ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES. Two middle aged ,jneh named George Wallace and John Duller were placed in the (lock at tile Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning and charged with being drunk and with being illegally on the promises of Dougatl Ferguson, a boardinghouse keeper, of Bright street, Gisborne. Dougall Ferguson said that on Saturday night he went around the bed-rooms of his .bparc|hig-hoiise and found the two accused hi bed'. They had no permission to be on the premises. He informed the police. The men appeared to have been drinking. Ho did not think they were there lor any dishonest purpose, but brought the charge as a. warning to others. The accused 'Wallace lodged at the house on two previous occasions, lie lodgod on Thursday night without permission, but paid for his room on Friday morning, lie did not remember the accused Butler ever staying at the house. Constable McPherson gave evidence of tlie arrest of the men at Gladstone hoarding-house, Bright .street. The accused li.ul nothing to say. The Bench said there was no evidence that the accused were in the house for any dishonest purpose and he would give them the benefit of the doubt. .He advised them to be more careful iiu future, and discharged them. ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. William Dowell; charged with false pretences was, on the application of the police, remanded until May 27th. Mr Bright appeared for accused.
