(Special to “Times.”) WELLINGTON, Alay 17. BURGLARS AT AVORK. For some time past there have been a number of very undesirable people in Wellington, and burglars have been busy in private houses, and now the ; Mice are giving a warning that three notorious hotel thieves have arrived in the city. Tlio recent- hotel robberies at Alarton are being investigated. ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. Tho local Acclimatisation Society speak well of the brown trout obtained from the Government hatchery at Ha'kataraiuea. The. society’s annual report states that last season large numbers of trout died in consequence of the drought. Licenses were issued as follows during the year: Deershooting, 88; -imported game, 318; ■ fishing, men 918, boys 230, women 38. The operations at tlio game farm were again satisfactory, notwithstanding the fact that 80 young pheasants were destroyed by ,a bush fire which swept suddenly tlirought 'the properly. The following is an approximate list of the birds reared at the farm during the year: Pheasants 351, English wild duck 100, New Zealand wild duck 15, American black duck 2S, Corean 8,. Californian quail 8; total 510. Of these 192 pheasants and 121 ducks, have been sent out, and there are about .155 pheasants and sonio GO ducks on the iarm at present... In regard to poaching, the report _says that tile appointment of. rangers in different districts lias checked poaching to a considerable degree, but until sportsmen themselves anti land owners unite with the society in a combined effort to put down the practice, poaching will go on. The assistance ol the police lias been obtained in the matter, the Commissioner having issued the necessary instructions to Ins officers.
