BRITISH FOOTBALL MATCH

[To 'run Editou.]

Sir, —‘On Saturday last whilst watching tlio football match being played, I overheard three gentlemen, speaking about the match to bo played hero against the British football j team, and one of them passed, thu j remark to his friends: “At anyrau they will have an easy win against Poverty Bay.” My own opinion it;, from what i have seen thus early : n the season, the local Union could •wipo out this reproach as there is; to my mind, th ■ . Ucrial for as good a team in 1V,,..:..y Bay as can he got outsido of the leading centres. But the men require development and combination, which can .only ho obtained by systematic coaching and strict attention to training, and 1 would suggest that about thirty of the best local players bo selected togo into training at once and- that three or four capable coaches;, say, .Messrs. J. Martin, HnUnmore, • lt„ Cole, J. Eaton, and A. W. -Rees be appointed, that is, if thoy are willing to act, and that the men have a practice match in about three weeks timo with a team strengthened by somo of the Thursday afternoon players. I also think it advisable to ask tlio Coast Union to nominate say two or three of their best players to be in town a* least about a fortnight before the match and with judicious selection a really strong side could be got together to uphold the best traditions of Poverty Bay.—l am etc. “HAS-BEEN.”
