DOMINION POPULATION.

ESTIMATED AT 997,058. (Press Association.) AVELLINGTON, May 7. The estimated population of the Dominion on the 31st of March last was 997,C05, males numbering 529,431 and females 468,227. These figures include a Maori population of 47,731 and tiie pojnilation of the Cook and other Pacific Islands 12,340. The net increase in population of the Dominion during the first quarter this year was 5.103, of which 5,020 were males and 3083 females. Births during the quarter totalled 6,817 and arrivals 12,906. The total increased by 19,723. The decrease during the same period was 11,620, made up as follows: deaths 2,262, departures 9,350.
