The meeting of the Gisborne Acclimatisation Society called for yesterday was adjourned, as a number of members ivore unable to attend.

Rain which had been threatening all day yesterday commenced to fall shortly after two o’clock this morning, and continued up till the time of going to press. ißutene Aharon, the native who was fined for drunkenness on Monday, was again before the -Court yesterday morning on a similar charge. His second lapse from the paths of sobriety cost him £l, or -four days. Some interesting figures, «b showing the rapid progress of Gisborne as a port, were given by Mr. Hawley at the farewell and presentation to him yesterday afternoon. In 1901 the revenue was £15,550; in 1905 £20,400, while at the end of the present financial year tho total had risen to the large sum of £50,113.

At- the Victoria Billiard Saloon last evening, 13. Lucas and W. Valentine tried conclusions in the championship games. Lucas got away from the start, and ran out when his opponent was 151. Both players were in remarkably good form throughout. The time for the 250 up was 'SO minutes, which is very creditable. There is a vacancy on tho Gish-,' no Harbor Board through Mr. TV. D. Lysnar being elected Mayor of Gisborne, -which office also carries aseat on tho Board. An influential deputation yesterday waited upon Mr. T. Holdon, the newly elected member of the Cook County Council, and asked him to become a candidate. Mr. Holden acceded to the request. A great deal of interest is being taken in tho Sheep Dog Trials, which are to be hold at Ormond on the 14th, loth and 16th of the present month. Altogether 150 dogs -have -been nominated for the different classes, and some i nterestin-g sheep-working should bo witnessed. • The committee are working hard to ensure the success of the gathering, and ample accommodation' will be provided for all attending the trials.

At Patutahi yesterday, in proposing the toast of “Our Host,” Mr. Massey jocularly remarked that it was significant that Irnshmen were rapidly filling up the highest positions in tliis country. Tho Governor was an Irishman, tlie Speaker of tho House of Representatives was an Irishman, the Premier was an Irishman, Mr. Massey himself was of tho same country, and now they were drinking the health of Mr. Taylor, another Irishman.

A meeting of the Charitable Aid Board was 'held in the Council chambers last- night. -Present Mr Townley (in the ohair), and -Councillors A. Forde ‘Matthews and J. Whinray. The custodian of the Old Men’s Home acknowledged tho -receipt of gifts from the Methodist church and Mesdames Woo to u, -Poole and Rees. There are at present twelve inmates in the Home. Crs. Bright and Holden .were appointed a visiting committee 'for the month and accounts amounting to £317 were -passed for payment.

At tho conclusion of the meeting of tlie Charitable Aid Board last night, Cr. Matthews, on behalf of the County Council, and Cr. Pettie, for the Borough Council, paid eloquent tributes to the administration of Mr. Townley on the Board, and emphasised the confidence which was felt in him by both Councils. Mr. Townley suitably responded, and said that lie was glad to accept the statements that both Councils were satisfied with the manner in which he had endeavored to carry out his duties. He was satisfied that the two Councils were working together for the best interests of tho district.
