Press Association. AVELLI-INGTON, May 3. . Tho .police inspector is advised by telegraph from Havelock of a fatal accident having occurred yesterday morning at Canv-astewn, about 5 miles from Havelock, the victim being Rasmussen Simonsen, G 3 years of age, a resident of -Canvastown. Sinionsen wa3 driving a vehicle and, in trying to .pass a timber wagon on a narrow .pari of the road, collided and was thrown under the -wagon, the wheels .passing over his chest. He was killed instantly. AUCKLAND, May 3.
Mr Jas. Mackenzie, Commissioner of Crown Lands, who is about to exchange .positions with Mr Stra-uchon, Commissioner at Welling toil, has been fa re welled by the members of the Auckland Land 'Board and by the members of the combined lands and survey staffs.. Members of the Board in taking leave of Mr. Mackenzie, testified to ki3 ability and industry and his absolute fairness and impartiality, whilst special reference was also made to his sympathies with the backbl'acks settlers. At a very large gathering of the staffs yesterday, Mr Mackenzie was presented with a handsome sterling silver salver • (towards which over a hundred officers contributed) and it was intimated that h suitable souvenir would be (forwarded to Mrs Mackenzie. Tho gathering, which was a very enthusiastic one, concluded with lloCid cheers for Mr Mackenzie. WESTPORT, May 3. _
The l efforts to refloat tho Taviuni have so far proved unsuccessful. As the tides are now taking off, it is unlikely she will be refloated, at all events, before next spring tides. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. . A serious accident occurred at Lyttelton about 10.30 this (Saturday) morning on board the big White Star liner lonic, which was discharging general cargo at No. 6 wharf, an old man named Martin Andrew Beymaun falling down one of the holds, and sustaining severe injuries from which lie subsequently died. At an inquest held this afternoon, a verdict of accidental death was returned. DUNEDIN, May 2. An inquest on tho body of Alexander McPhee, 12 years, one of the victims of the boating disaster m tne harbor on April 18th, opened to-day. Formal evidence was given, and the inquest was then adjourned until after the result of the nautical enquiry into.the collision is known. Mr Uiaham (Coroner) said lie tiiougltfc that the result of tho inquiry would bo stated about Thursday or I'l'iday. I. e would then call the jury together again, when they would decide il it was necessary to call any further evidence.
