A CANDIDATE’S SOLILOQUY.

John Townley’s virtues up to now I. fear I have ignored, And even now, I say he’s not Fit for my Harbor Board.

I now will publish what I’vo done, And what I mean to do; It- will astonish and confound John Sheridan and you.

I built tho bridge that spans the stream AA’hero Roebuck ltoad doth end. That I might comprehend steel pipes Three guineas I did spend! ! !

I saw a man called Jickell, who Taught me his drainage plan, And now I. know on drainage schemes As much as any man.

I reckon I can drain the town ; And drain your pockets ? No! I’ll somehow save it on your roads, And make the roads also.

A cunning wizard of finance AA'lio saves most where lie spends; For me a candle longer lasts AATien burning at both ends.

I’ll drain your town, and it will with Electric light bo lit; -■ I’ll make new streets and 'bridges, too, Ex nihil multum fit.

And I will buy you pleasure grounds And castles in the air; And on the beacli I’ll wave my wand And hia'kc a harbor there.

And still you’ll pay the same old rate And not a penny more, For, as I say,-the more wc spend The more ■we’ll save, I’m sure.
