ELECTION OF COUNCILLOR.

MR. DARTON’S CANDIDATURE

At the conclusion of Dr. Williams’ meeting, Air. Geo. Darton, one of the candidates at the Council election, addressed the electors, and touched on a. number of questions that had been raised. Like each of the other candidates, ho claimed to bo progressive, He was personally in favor of rating on unimproved values, but there was a great deal to be said on both sides of the question. He claimed that it ivould encourage building and indirectly reduce tho rents to the workers.

Regarding roads, his opinion was that the whole question hinged on tho likelihood of obtaining cheaper metal supplies. When Air. Alarchant visited Gisborne, it was he (the speaker) who took him to Waihirere, and Air. Alarchant hail recommended the stone, not alone for the use of the Harbor Board, but also for the roads. Referring to the proposed tramway scheme, Air. Darton said that whether elected to tho Council or not lie w'ould strongly oppose tho line being owned by a private individual or a company. With reference to drainage, he said that all tho reports' which had been received showed that draining into the river was an utter impossibility. Ho ridiculed the drainage scheme proposed by Air. Lysnar, and said that he was quite certain that no ratopaver would tolerate the system of turning crude sewage into the river. He agreed with Air. Hoy that it was impossible to drain Gisborne with a septic tank, and strongly advocated the drainage system as propounded by an engineer as against the “scheme” of an eugmeer. Air. Darton concluded his address by* stating that he did not want any vote of thanks, but if there was any appreciation he .would ! ' ?k them to record it at the polling booth. (Applause.)
