(Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 26. Mr. Geo. G. Stead was reported to be slightly better yesterday morning. At an inquest respecting tho death, on the previous day, of Wm. Allen Worth Lewis, a laborer, 49 years of age, residing at Hazeidean Road, Addington, it was stated that the deceased, who bore a high character and was greatly respected, was formerly a member of the police force, but retired voluntarily to enter into business, tho 11011-success of which hud evidently preyed upon his mind. Tho man’s wife related that he had been strange in his manner for several days. Tho jury returned a verdict that deceased committed suicide by poisoning while in a state of unsound mind.
DUNEDIN, April 25. A five-roomed house, owned and occupied by Jas. Tomkinsoii, junr., of Waikola, was destroyed by fire on Thursday. The house and furniture, valued at £3OO, were consumed. Tho house was insured for £2OO in the Alliance office; the furniture was uninsured.
AUCKLAND, April 26. A young man named Alfred Boyle, employed on the permanent- -way by tho Railway Department,was brought to tho Auckland hospital from Tuakau, Waikato, last evening, suffering from a severe scalp wound. Ho had a narrow escape from death. Ho was working on the line, when a train came along, and he, for somo reason, stepped back partly on the line, being knocked down by the train.
A man named Louis Perrin, whilst stepping off a tramcar in Queen Street last night, met with an accident which resulted in his having his right foot taken off. AVANGANUI, April 26. The annual meeting of the AVanganui Agricultural Association was held on Saturday afternoon. Mr. G. Y. Sinclair, for many years a prominent official, was elected president. The report and balance-sheet disclosed a satisfactory state of affairs, though thero is a. debit at the bank of £B3l. The assets over liablities aro £1532. During the year £2ll was spent on permanent improvements, including turnstiles, cloak-room, and some improvements to the produce shed. In addition to this, the loan of £2OO has been repaid, as well as £504, accounts outstanding at the end of last year. The Association now has 105 life and 720 ordinary members. BLENHEIM, April 21. The Blenheim egg-laying total for the Week was 501. The grand total is 1320. The highest for the week arc:- —Poultry Journal (white Leghares) 30, Sturrock (black Orpingtonr) 30, Miss Brown (black Orpingtons) 28, Miss Brown (white Leghorn:-) 23. The highest to date are: flturroek (black Orpingtons) 86, •Miss Brown (black Orpingtons) 80, Poultry Journal (white Leghorns) 77, Boyce (white AYynodottes) 66, O’Sullivan (white AA’yandoltes) 57.
