7,'he driver of the Bendigo train had been driving for 30 years, and was one of the most capable men in the service. Ho is almost distracted over tlie disastev. The driver ol the second engine felt the brakes go on, but tliev were suddenly released agt ain, and tlm train bounded forward >„ on its errand of destruction. There arc bitter comments at. t ic utter want of preparedness of the Department to cope with accidents. It took an hour and three-quarters after the summons to get a ft relief train away. . It is bolloved the compensation will cost £12,000. (Received April 22, 5.13 p.m.) In addition to tho dead, as already eah led, others to succumb are: Jos. Davies, C. Williams, Thos. Atkinson, Rupert Watson. Leonard Gates, . G. Hughes, and Annie Tucker. Tiio first-named two died in the hospital, (deceived April 22, 10.53 p.m.) MELBOURNE, April 22. Millie Giles lias succumbed to her injuries, this making the forty-fourth death. Four others are critical.
