MUNICIPAL COUNCIL ELECTION. IN responso to tlio requests of many of the Burgesses oi the Borough, I have decided to offer my services Tor tho vacancy on tho Gisborne Borough Council. If elected I will do my best to further tho interests of tho Borough generally. G. E. BARTON.

MAYORAL ELECTION. TO THE BURGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBORNE, JjADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— In response to the request of n largo number of ratepayers, I beg to offer you my services as'Mayor during the coming year. ( - ■ . My views generally on Municipal matters aro strongly progressive. The most important question at present before the Council is that of sanitation, in which I take a very keen interest. I am earnestly desirous of initiating a Drainago System in the more congested parts of the Borough, which may bo extended to ombraco other portions necessity arises. The Water Supply must bo pushed to a successful completion, and thoso streets not already reticulated must bo provided for as speedily as possiblo. There is no doubt that our Streets and Roads generally are in a deplorable condition. Many are without metal at all, and in many more the metal is worn out. The whole question resolves itself into that of obtaining 'a cheaper and more regular supply of metal. I shall endeavor to develop the sources of metal wo already possess, and also to procuro additional supplies. Tho number of Street Lamps should be considerably augmented. I am in favor of the Municipal control of the Gas Works, and of bringing the Fire Boards Act into operation. I consider that the time has arrived when Gisborne should have a continuous Telephone Service, in order to bring it into line with centres of equal importance. I am strongly of the opinion that provision requires to be made for cases of Chronic Disease such as cannot be dealt with in our present Hospital, and also that the present accommodation at the Old Men’s Home should bo extended so as to include both sexes. If you elect mo I shall have a seat on the Harbour Board. I am in favor of the construction of an efficient Outer Harbor, believing that better shipping facilities would materially advance the welfare of the town and district. I endorso the action of the Board in procuring the advice of eminent engineers, and in referring the plans to the marine superintendents of the companies trading to the port. I shall use every endeavour to have the matter placed fairly and squarely before the ratepayers as early as possiblo. I am anxious that futher Reserves should be secured for the people, and especially desire to obtain a Public Reserve up the Waimata River for the use of boating parties. I heartily advocate that our Railway should bo pushed on without further delay. When the forests are tapped an export timber trade will be developed, which will result in materially reducing freights on coal and other imports, thus reducing the cost of living in Gisborne. I have tho utmost faith in the future development of Gisborne, and should you honor me by election it will be my oonstant endeavor to promote and advance its interests by every means in my power. My watchword will ever be “Progress.” Yours faithfully, J. W. WILLIAMS.
