WELLINGTON.

THE STOLEN PAINTING. CANDIDATES FOR THE ELECTION. (Special to “Times.”) WELLINGTON, April 14. The talk in the city yesterday was largely* about the theft of the Leader picture from the Art Gallery. It is thought by many that the leaving of the lantern and the jemmy were a Mind and) that the theft was not committed by an ordinary burglar. The picture did not belong to the Art Society but was presented by Mrs Rhodes to the Mayor for. the citizens of Wellington. It was simply housed in the Art Society’s Gallery, pending the erection of a free Art Gallery for the city. A condition was that the picture should be insured and I understand it was insured for £SOO against fire, but not of course against theft.

Mr Herdman is now definitely announced as a candidate in the Opposition interest for .Wellington North. Dr. Newman will be the Opposition candidate for the new suburban Beat. There is some likelihood of Mr Hartgill’s standing in the Opposition interest against 'Mr Hall of Wa.ipawa. -So far as can ibe judged: a.t present, the contest for Wellington central will be between Mr Fisher, the present member, and) Mr. o’(Regan, the Government single-tax candidate. It is not yet settled who will .be the candidate for Wellington South. A good! deal will probably depend upon the result of the approaching mayoral election. Mr Barber, the Government candidate for Newtown, who retains the prohibition vote, is not likely to bo defeated though the boundaries of his constituency have been considerably altered. It is probable that Labor candidates will be selected for all- of the city and some of the suburban seats. A good organiser is at work hardening up the party.
