CRICKET SELECTION.
[To THE EnlTOll.] Sir,—Your issue of yesterday contained the names of tho -players chosen by the selection committee ito represent this district -at cricket, .against tho Eden Cricket team visiting Gisborne -at Easter. A representative eleven, I take it, is composed of itlie district’s eleven best players for the season, that is, the men who- show the best performances -with -bat or ball, -and are also useful in tho field. Weli, now, for our chosen .team, nine of the players undoubtedly dese-rve the honor of selection—no ono can gainsay that—although ono of them has only played in ono match. Tho tenth man has, true, made a few scores lately—on the concrete, where any player should score well, bub has igriominiously failed ou it-he turf wicket. Still, he -was one of the “guns” in yea-rs gone by, and .to. leave him out would be sacrilege. Ye gods forbid ! We now come to tho eleventh man. Surely in this instance the committee must have taken to heart "“Cover Point’s” remarks in last Saturday’s Herald, that men of past experience—mark the phrase—should lie chosen, not young promising players with the loading averages. By wliat magic came this eleventh player to be included? Was -lie one of the selectors? I wonder ! Or was he put in to strengthen the howling? Presumably so, for I can find no -other solution to the enigma. If the Attack then was so weak, why not take into consideration the performances of -a leading To.Rau Thursday player, who has proved himself to bo one of the most successful howlers and finest fields in the Bay ? . Was lie not -justified for inclusion in the team -representing, -tho district? No wonder cricket in the Bay .-is sO far advanced -and popular. Witness the unbiassed justice meted out to young and promising players. Notice how they are encouraged in their meritorious attempts to improve their cricket, -and -how tin representative cricket they are selected -before hasbeens” and “nevernbeens.” Thankin'* you for this valuable space, I am ’ ctC " “ADMIRER.”
