ROAD METAL.
DIFFICULTY IN GETTING SUPPLIES. A MUNICIPAL SCOW SUGGESTED Somo little time was spent by Borough Councillors last evening in discussing tho difficulty of obtaining a ■apply of metal for road-making purposes. Tho discussion aroso from tho rcadHg of a letter from one of tho con-n-actors for carting metal, Mr. A. J. tVilson, who atfkcd a return of his leposit, as tlio Cook County Council iad stopped his teams from obtaining supplies at tho Patutahi Quarry. Tlio Town Clerk explained that tho tiiarry had been closed for tho winder, and no further supplies of metal rero obtainable. Cr. Wbinray thought tho contractor vas not to blame. The contract would have been completed if tho netal was obtainable. He moved tho leposit bo returned. Cr. Pet tie seconded tlio motion. Tiie Mayor said the contractor had net with difficulties, and lie agreed with the motion. Dr. Williams said lie thought tho ,’ouncil should try and get a quarry f their own. There was a County piarry on tho Wairoa road, and if ho Council could get control of tho and, mon could be put on to break tone in the winter ready to be carted n tho spring. If tilings wont on as n the past the Council would always iave incomplefced contracts. He thoiglit a committee should go into tho latter and prepare a report. Tho Mayor said there was a protosal before tho Cook County Council -) lay down a tramway to tho Patuahi quarry, and if that was dono tho lorough would be ablo to get metal ir about 3s per yard. If they could [ot metal at that price tho borough ould uso 10,000 yards a year. It was decided to return tho doiosit. Cr. Somervell said tho Dunedin letal was the best he had seen, and, hough the idea was novel, he could :ot see why the Council should not urcha.se a scow to bring tho metal roni the quarry to Gisborne. Tho >u lied in metal would make superior cads, and would pay best in the end. The Mayor said a 6cow would take . ears to bring a supply to tho town, to would like an assurance given to he County Council that if a tramway ) Patutahi was laid down, a certain apply would he taken each year. Cr. Wbinray referred to 'the as.halted block in Gladstone Road, and •unmended the Overseer on the work, '.it thought a good top-dressing of ar at regular intervals would tend to ■reserve tho work. It was decided to inform the Cook ounty Council that if a tramway was made to connect the Patutahi quarry, ho borough would take 10,000 yards'a ear. Tlio question of obtaining a quarry t Wairoa was referred to the Works ’ommittee.
