SEVERAL PREMISES DESTROYED. Press Association. GORE, April G. A disastrous fire occurred at Mataura at 2 o’clock this morning. The lire was discovered l.n the hardware premises of J. and jj. Galt, in tho centre of tho town, and spread to Alex. Galt’s, butcher, Welham Bros., bakers, and Watson, tinsmith, on one side, and on tho o'her to a small building occupied by McKay, dentist, and Dr. Hay, where it was stopped by a brick wall. The premises and nearly all the cijntents were destroyed. Tho stocks of Domigan, chemist,' Greenwood, j stationer, Hardy, tobacconist., Adams, cyclist, Smith and Jeffrey, watchmakers, and the Southland Drapejry Co., were removed in safety, but] the spread of the fire was stopped through . exertions of the bucket brigade. The .insurances available are: J. and J. Galt, £2OO on premises and £IOOO on the stock in the North British ; Alex. Galt, plant, £IOO in the Victoria; Welham Bros., stock and plant, £IOO in the South British and £IOO in the Victoria. Tho following are additional insurances: Watson’s plant and stock, £2OO, in the New Zealand, and building, owned by G. J. Penny, £175, in the New Zealand; Hardy’s and Donnigan’s premises, owned by R. D. Yule, £250 in New Zealand, damage estimated at £25; Mackny’s and‘Dr. Hay’s premises, also owned Yule, £6O in the New Zealand; Welham s and A. Glilt’s premises, owned J. Allis and Waddell, £4OO, in the South British, and £l5O in the Royal; J. and J. Galt estimate their loss at £500; A. Galt, £170; Welham Bros., £150; Watson, £100; Penny, £IOO, over insurances, and Hardy’s and Domigan’s lost considerably through the shifting of stock. Mackay was uninsured. H.s loss is £25.
