NO-LICENSE CAMPAIGN.
SYSTEMATIC ORGANISATION. The Gisborne No-License League lias engaged tlie services of 'Mr G. 15. Tveilr of Blenheim as organising worker for tlio whole of the district. Air Kerr arrived by the Victoria on Saturday morning and will at once enter upon his work. In conversation with a “Times” reporter, Air Kerr gave some particulars of his appointment and the plan of campaign he means to ‘adopt. “I have come to Gisborne under recommendation from the Itev. Frank Isitt to work in the no-license cause, and -I feel sure,” said Air Kerr, “that no-license will be carried at the next poll. At tile last election only 28 votes were needed to close tho hotels, and our party feel confident these can be obtained if the- district is properly worked and a systematic canvass made. I will remain here up to election time, and besides working from house to house I will deliver lectures in tho outlying districts upon the success of no-license in Invercargill and other towns, and try to convince the people that no-license is tho best for Gisborne.” “I am not a narrow minded or a bigoted man,” continued Air Korr, the entire abolition of intoxicating liiptor. I am thoroughly interested in tho work, and have been an advocate of temperance for many years. lAfy mother was ono of seven women who established the first 1101 icon so league in Now Zealand and iiad the satisfaction of seeing reduction carried at Sydenham, Christchurch. “The Gisborno No-License League will direct all my work. There io every hope of success, and it is believed that if a no-lieenso candidate is chosen, ho will poll well. Tho Gisborne district has been greatly neglected by outside lecturers in tho past, but an effort will be made to secure sonic good speakers this year. Even with Uiis disadvantage,” said Air Kerr, hopefully, “Gisborno lias been very faithful to the cause, and if the figures of the past count for anything, they should count for success this time. “I hope to soon he able td visit the outlying districts and by calling from house to house distributing literature, test the feeling in the country. This is my first work as an organiser; but I am confident of success and hope that at the end of the year Gisborno will follow the example of other towns and decide for no-license.”
