CEMENT MANUFACTURE.
A NEW COMPANY FORMED. For some years past the nmoim ol building ami ferro-coneroto wor. tint has been undertaken in New Zea laud lias been so great that the var .mis cements in the Dominion? hav been unablo to copo with the do maud for Portland cement, many o. tho companies being oversold fo: soiiio months to come. In addition t the local siipiply,- no less than 21,611 tons of imported cement, valued a £60.2-11 was used last year, and cvoi with this, many buildings'havo beei rotarded because of the inability t< to get .a. first-class produce. X A company called tho Golden Pa; Cement works Ltd., is now lieiiif formed to erect works lor tho inanu facturo of cement at Golden Hay, o: Terakoho, in tho Nelson district whero thero ifj an unquestionable sup ply of all materials necessary for making a high grudo article. Tho site is i most central ono; within easy distanci from all the chief centres where large building are going on, and as an increased demand for commit is anticipated through tlio cutting of the Arthur’s Pass tunnel, the prospects of tho proposed company look particularly bright. Cement has on account of the demand, recently advanced in price, and ilargo ,prolife are being made by tho companies now engaged in its manufacture, this .I mug especially so with the MilburnCompany, near Dunedin, and tho Auckland Cement Company, whoso wm'ks are at Whangarei, and the Wilson to Aland -Company, tiha.shar.es. in all eases being quoted at a considerable advance on par. In reporting on tho prospects ol the Golden Bay Cement Works, Mr. J. A. J. McLaren, of Auckland, says : “The site contains all the necessary material •oil the property-, without importing for tho mixture. Thero is a fine s : to suitable for a wharf within two or threo chains from where the works could be erected; where vessels could be berthed for shipping purposes. Tho geographical position being central, the Company would command tlio cement trade all over Now Zealand as it would have every advantage over other firms. Thero is a sup* ply of coal on tho property si itable for burning purposes, though cral could bo obtained with littlo cost for freight, from Westport or Greymoutli. After going into calculations ho estimates that after providing Kr all contingencies.- and selling cement at tho low cost to builders of 10s 6(1 por cask, a plant making 12,000 tons a year would yeild a' profit of £9,400, and with a larger plant the profits would be correspondingly increased. Tlio company will be formed with a capital of £25,000, made up in £1 shares; payable 2s on application, 2s on allotment, and tlio balance in easy calls. When tho whole of tlio shares have been subscribed tlio erection of the works will be eomniencd, and should be in full running order iii about ton months. iMr. J. iS. Swartz, who has been in Gisborne the last few days in tilie interest of the new company, returned to the South last night
