THE ENGLISH CHURCH IN' ST. PETERSBURG.

The Bishop of London, whose diocese embraces the English church in St. Petersburg, was to visit the Russian capital early in February. The English Church in St; Petersburg; is under tile auspices of the British Factory, a survival from the days of Ivan, the Terrible. The Factory was originally established at Archangel by the agents, or “factors,” a company of London merchants who sent a pioneer expedition to the White Sea early in the sixteenth century. When Peter the Great built St. Petersburg, he asked the Factory to transfer itself to the new capital. The Factory was liberally endowed with land on the banks of the Neva, and a church and other buildings were erected. The stipend of the first chaplains was GOO roubles per annum, with a free house and tnvelling expenses from England. Extraordinary privileges were accorded to the Factory, among them being the right of levying taxes on all British shipping arriving at Kronstadt. It was not until the sixties of last century that ‘British shipping ceased paying dues to the Factory.
