NUHAKA NORTH
(from our correspondent.) MARCH 24. Showery weather has much retarded sheep dipping and other work during the past two weeks, and on Thursday last lieayy rain set in and continued throughout the'day and in the evening a severe thunder storm swept across tho district. The hills and valleys were lit up by the vivid lightning flashes and sheen and cattle were much disturbed by the loud peals of thunder. Several large rimu trees wero uprooted and branches scattered in various directions. On Friday the rain continued and all streams and rivers soon became in a llooded state. Two of Redstone’s mail coaches were delayed at Morere. The Tunanui river was not safe for the Gisborne coach to cross and. fourteen feet of water at Stewart’s Crossing blocked the Wairoa coach. On Saturday morning the rivers subsided a little and Mr 0. Redstone successfully piloted his team across tho Tunanui river and proceeded on the road to Gisborne. The other coach returned' to Wairoa on Sunday by way of Onoutama and Waikopu, Stewart’s Crossing being too deep to ford. , i The continuous wet weather has made the roads very heavy lor wheel traffic. Fed is plentiful for all kinds of stock. In some localities the early sown turnip crops are not looking very promising, the caterpillars and other pests, appear to liavo been too active and ravenous. At time of writing' (Tuesday morning) the rain, is still coming down. The hills and valleys are enveloped in fog and the streams and rivers are again rising fast.
