GISBORNE MAYORALTY.
DR. AA’ILL IA MS AVIL-L CONTEST THE OFFICE.
In reply to the requisition presented to Dr. AYilliams on Tuesday by a number of influential ratepayers, asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the office of Mayor of -Gisborne, the doctor yesterday forwarded the following letter to Air. C. A. De Lull tour :
“Dear Sir, —In response to the requisition presented to mo bvyou yesterday, on behalf of yourself and 126 other ratepayers, I have to say that, after earnest consideration, I have decided to accede to the request. I deeply appreciate the compliment paid to me, and I assure you that if the ratepayers further honor me by electing me to the position, I shall do my utmost to conserve and advance the interests of Gisborne. There is one matter, however, which I should like to be clearly understood. The nature of my profession makes it impossible for me to be always master of my time, and, if elected, I may on occasions .have to claim the indulgence of the,Council and the burgesses for inability to carry out engagements. I imagine is not the proper time to give exiiression to my views on municipal affairs, blit I shail take an early opportunity of putting .them clearly before tho ratepayers.”
