SETTLEMENT REFUSED BY THE MEN. STRIKE OF PAINTERS. United Press Association —Copyright SYDNEY, Alarch 23. The conference of coastal steamship companies and the Wharf Laborer’s Union was resumed yesterday afternoon*. The representatives of the shipping companies presented their final terms under which they are prepared to settle the strike. These were subsequently considered, and refused by representatives of the men. Tho conference adjourned until to-morrow. Air Huges states the position is critical ,but not hopeless. • ••> • The Employer’s Federation; 1 M a meeting, discussed tho course of action the merchants and traders should take in connection with the strike. It was resolved that the time had arrived to assert tho right of an employer to utilise non-union labor, especially at a time when unionists refused to work at the arbitration award wages. It was further decided to give fn 11 support to the coastal companies in connection with principle, also expressing admiration at the courage, patience, and consideration of the public .interest exhibited by the representatives of the postal companies in connection with the present dispute. Painters employed by many large city firms have struck for an increase of ald per hour. There are 300 idle. A number of Governments contracts arc involved. (Received Alarcli 24, 9.46 p.m.) SYDNEY, _ March 24. Tho painters’ strike is extending, and 750 men are idle. A few firms have conceded the demands.

Tho wharf laborers’ strike conferenco was continued to-day, and aftei the adjournment the press representatives" were informed that the position was not any-more critical than vosterday, and that a definite statement as to whether it was to bo peaco or an indefinite continuation of the’struggle would probably be coven to-morrow afternoon. There is reason to believe, however, that the. position has somewhat lmIM The'been Sea- Stevedores’ Association has issued summonses against i-l members of the Wharf Laborers’ Union for breaches ot the award.
