Tho nesunl fortnightly mooting o> tlio Gisborne .Borough Council whs hold last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. Town ley), Crs. Pottie, Somervell, Mann, 'Williams, Miller, AVhiurn.v.
j\lr. Rowley asked tlio Council to pay £25 promised towards tlio baths at'tlio State School.
The request was. granted. Mr. I’ 1 . Morico asked permission to connect his property at Kajti with tho Waiinata river by a- drainage pipe, tho work to be done to tho satis!action of tho Overseer.
Tlio letter was referred to the Overseer to report. Cr. Pottie stated that a lot ot water was lying in Lho district, and drainage would bo beneficial to the district.
The Borough Solicitors (Messrs. Chris]) and Coleman) forwarded the deed of cancellation of the holding of land at Waihiroro taken for water works purposes, for signature. Tho Council decided to sign and seat thoi document. Messrs ' Craddock ami Co., engm- ' eers, Christchurch, wroto enquiring if water was available in G.isborno lor ]<ower purposes, and, if so, on what terms? It was decided to reply that these was no available water power. - Mr. W. Morgan asked the Council to continue the grant to the technical classes. The plumbing class, recently started under Mr. May, had six men and eight apprentices enrolled. The Council decided to forward a grant of £2O. On the application ol Mr. hum, it was decided to register a right-of-way running at the sido of tho British Empire Hotel, Peel Street. Tlio Logan Point Quarry Company, Dunedin, quoted tho following prices for road metal at Port Chalmers: 2iin 4s 9d per ton, ljin 5s 3d per ton, toppings and screenings 6s 9d a ton. The Mayor said tho cost of tlio metal, with freight, would bo about £1 a yard, which was very heavy. It the boats to carry the metal could get a back freight the cost might bo lowered. . , Cr. AVhiuray said that some inducements might bo offered to the shipping firms to carry tho metal at a lower cost. ' If a back freight of timber could be got, shipping companies might bo induced to trade with both ports, and carry both freights at reasonable rates. It was - decided not to purchase any metal at the quotation. Dr. DcLislo drew tho attention ot the Council to tho condition of some old timber that was being used in rebuilding a- boarding 'house in tlio bo--1 The'letter was referred to the Overset- to make inquiries. The Department of Agriculture informed tlio Council that ix local butclier had removed a diseased carcaso from tho abattoirs, and ashed that the Council to make arrangements to prevent such a thing occurring again, as the ollicer in charge of tho abattoirs was responsible. Tho carcaso was not sold lor consumption. Tlio Council decided to engago a carter to remove condemned carcases in future. , Tho Department of Public Works informed the Council that the constmct.ion of. the Gisborne-Rotorua railway necessitated the diversion of a part oi the Maraetaha road ; and inquired ll the Council offered any objection to the diversion being made. . It was decided to agreo to the deviation being made, and to ask that tlio road bo continued to tho shore. ; Seven hairdressers ancl tobacconists Ma,lim it: Gisborne presented a peti-tion-iJkYrg that the hours of amv.Dg bo fixed at 8.30 p.m. dany, .-xeoptmg on Thursday at 1 p.m., and Saturdays at 10.30 p.m. and certain holidays. The request was granted, and the petition is to bo gazetted. Mr. R. 1-lav, consulting engineer, informed the Council that lie was in communication with the contractors for the laying of the pipes or the waterworks, with a view to the progress of tho work, and that the interests of the borough were being conserved in every way. Copies of correspondence between Mr. Hay and the Spiral Steel Pipe Company, who have the contract, were enclosed. . The Council expressed satisfaction at the way the engineer was compellj uor the contractors to attend to tlio details of the work. Cr Williams moved that Mr. Hay b 0 asked to forward periodical reports of tlio progress of tho work. Cr Somervell said that there seemed to ho no finality about the work, and tho Council should now be able to form some idea when the works were to be completed. Ho seconded Cr. Wiliams’ motion. Cr. Whinray said the letter from Mr. Play was a great relict to tho Council, and cleared the ground very 'much. He thoroughly appreciated the way Mr. Hay was attending to tho A '°Cr' Maim said the Council should have had such a report weeks ago. Tlio motion was carried. REPORTS.

The various streets requiring water connections were Mm Road, Stanley xtoad, Leith .Street, Bytton Road, Wellington Street, Wi Pore Street, nail Direct, D'ox Street, Russell otreat, McLean Street, Rawm Stieet, street, Graham Road, Iranui Rond, Parau Stret, Dickson Street, Coleman Gneeseman Road, Crawford Road, If nouses and 8 whares. It was decided to lay down connections in Parau Street and Stanley Road, as tlio pipes needed aro m Stock. . . , Cr. AVhinray’s motion was carried. Crs. Bright, Sheridan, and Sawyer were appointed a waterworks committee. Tlio Overseer (Mr. M. Morgan) reported that tho broken weather had temporarily stopped tlio tarring work, and tlio men had been put on to repair the streets and paths and the
donning of water channels. Ho recommended that lho footpath in AVninui Street bo kerbed along tho esplanade to AVaiimi Road, the cost being estimated at about £49. As it was improbable that any more stono would be obtained from tlio Patutalii ctrirry, lie recommended tluit 400 van Is be obtained from Dunedin as a trial shipment, to bo used on Gladstone read. The recommendation to kerb AVninui Street was approved. Cr. Miller moved that if tlio Council could got a back freight to Dunedin a quantity of metal be obtained as a trial shipment, provided the freight rales were reasonable. The motion was carried, and tho resolution was referred to the Public Works Committee to mako arrangements for cheaper freights. Accounts amounting to £BOB 18s 7d were passed for payment. The tender of Mr. J. S. Morrison, £B9, was accepted for painting the' abattoirs.
