MAYORAL HONORARIUM.
FIXED AT £l5O,
,At the meeting of tho Gisborne Borough Council on March 10th, Cr. Miler gave notice that lie would move at tho next Council meeting that tho Mayor receive nil honorarium ol £l5O for tho ensuing year. When tho motion wan called upon last meeting, Cr. Miller said he would ask tho Mayor (Mr. J. Townley) to move tho motion, which would liavo more weight coming from tho Mayoral chair. . Tills tho Mayor consented to do, Cr. Miller seconding the motion. Or. Pettie opposed the motion on the grounds that payment lor the oifico might ’prevent public-spirited men from accepting the position. He did not think tho borough, with so many loan proposals in hand, could afford such a largo amount. Cr. Mann said tho office called for many sacrifices, and whoever occupied the chair should bo offered some equivalent. Tho ratepayers could well afford the amount suggested. Cr AVliinray supported the motion. Tho Alayor said he had often been told that tho office was too expensive for business men to contest, as the incidental expenses were considerable. He hoped tho motion would bo carried. Perhaps £IOO a year would have been enough to start with, but other towns, less prosperous than Gisborne, allowed their Alayors reasonable honorariums. Tho motion was then put and carried, only Cr. Pottio voting against it.
