NEW COMMONWEALTH GOVERNOR.

APPOINTMENT OF EARL DUDLEY

NEWSPAPER COAIAIENTS

United Press Association —Copyright LONDON, March 20. It is officially announced. that tho Earl of Dudley has succeeded Lord Northcoto as Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. It is understood that he sails in June. The Chronicle says that Lord Dudley’s appointment is excellent. His porsonal and sporting qualities, his sympahty, good senso, and judgment render him popular. The Times compliments Lord Northcote, the retiring GovernorGeneral, upon his tact, wisdom and dignity, and says the appointment of Lord Dudley, who held one of the highest offices of State, :is .intended as a compliment to the Commonwealth. Lord Dudley, says the Times, possesses some obvious qualifications besides bis personal attractions. He has travelled much, and knows many parts of tho Empire. Ho fought in South Africa. Ho is a great lover of sports. Tho social .influence of his gracious wife will be appreciated in Australia. The Dublin Express declares that the appointment is tho reward of Lord Dudley’s changed attitude on Irish affairs. The Westminster Gazette states: The regret is that Lord Dudley is not here to take his part in the Irish controversy. The appointment will be as popular as the Dudleys will be themselves when the Commonwealth gets to know them. The Pall Mall Gazette states: Tho Commonwealth will more appreciate the appointment because it is not political. Lord Dudley couples with a keen interest in political questions a very conspicuous impatience of "arty. His' attitude to party and bis susceptibility to local views and impressions will certainly not tend to mitigate bis popularity. Ho should prove the right man in the right place. MELBOURNE, March 21. Mr. Deakin. in announcing Lord Dudley's appointment, said he believed it would bo highly acceptable to the people of the Commonwealth. He paid a tribute to Lord Northcote, than whom .in any part of the Empire no man had proved liimsell a better representative of tho King.
