HOW MR. REID TOOK THE PLATFORM.
In his early clays, that is to-day, when he was at the cheerful optimistic age of fifteen, Mr 0. H. Reid joined a debating society, connected with the Sydney School af Arts. In a lecture given recently at the invitation of that institution lie told the reason. He had a brother two years older than he was, “and,” said Mi Reid, “we used to get into argument together, with the result 'hat lie always shut me up in about three minutes. 1 determined to join a debating club, and get even v. an him; and that was the broad basis of any earlv beginnings as a public speaker.” Mr Reid assured his audience that though from the newspapers it might be supposed that he was an object of hatred and contempt, in some uarts of Australia, tins was not the case for ho was equally at home before a Melbourne or J chmond audience as in lus own Slate, and wherever he went he was treated with generosity and courNssy l\V those who most strongly difteivu from him.
