OVERCROWDED SCHOOLS.

INDIGNATION IN OTAGO.

Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 18. At a meeting of the Education Board to-day reference was made to overcrowding in the Forburv School. The chairman (Mr. Mackenzie, M.P.) said that- the final development of a nine-months communication 'with the Department on- the subject was a letter, stating that the inspector-gen-eral was coming to Dunedin, and would enter into conference with v the Board’s inspector, and see whether there was any scheme by which overcrowding might bo mitigated. Opinion was strongly expressed that the Minister and the Department were opposed to the Education Boards and were attempting to undermine their power. In the case under discussion the Department took action only after representation had been made direct by the committee.

- The following resolution was passed unanimously: “That this Board expresses its profound surprise at the Department's letter, and enters an emphatic protest- against tlio needs ol the Otago education district being subjected to tlie will and dict-uin of salaried officials, as an encroachment upon tlio authority of the Board, winch is representative of the peoplo of the province.”
