A social under tlio auspices of the local branch of the H.A.C.R.S. will be hold at His Majesty’s theatre this evening. Tho music will bo supplied by Aliss Alooro’s orchestra. Great preparations have been made and’an enjoyable evening’s entertainment can be looked forward to.
At; the Police- Court yesterday a first-offending drunkard was dealt with iin the usual manner. Sergeant Williams stated that the -man had been found an the river at- an early hour that- .morning with only a shirt on. The S.Af. said .accused should feel gll.ul that in place of being fined for drunkenness -he was not the subject of a coronial inquiry. Old residents in tho Ashburton County stato that tkev cannot remember -a moro rapid growth of feed than that of tho past week. Fields and roadsides that were less than two weeks ago barren or parched and brown aro now clothed in green, in many instances fully two inches high. The weather Is all that could be dosired to induce growth, occasional showers with mild temperature having been experienced during tho past few days. *Lato sown turnips and early oats in the hill districts are shooting up fast.

•Some time ago it was stated that a resident of Tauranga, in itho ißay of Plenty, lhad discovered some -preparation which possessed- -the qualities needed to bring about .an .immediate extermination of the muchhated cockroach. This concoction has since boon tried -upon well-known Auckland coastal steamers, which itho travelling public have reason to know were infested -with cockroaches, and tho result, -according to itho “Star” is .remarkable. Boats which were alivo with the -posit are now absolutely free. Tho preparation has been tried ashore with similar success. A “Star” representative was shown the bakehou-so of .a well-known Auckland bakery, which for twenty years has boon over-run with the cockroaches. A week ago tho .Tauranga patent was -tried, with the result that thero has been a- steady evacuation, and tlio premises arc now free of wfli-at has for many years -been .regarded as an ammovablo host of 'cockroaches.

The -Melbourne “Ago” states -that a -sensational scone,' involving the self-destruction of -a girl, -was witnessed ono evening recently at North Fitzroy railway station. At about seven o’clock a- girl, well dressed, of quiet manners and refined -appearance, walked on- to tho station and stood on tho edge of the platform, looking down on the line. She was noticed by the stntionmaster, who was attracted -by her contemplative eratcly place her head on the line, at the same time extending her arms at fir-'i length. The desperate action was done quietly and .without any excitement' oil the girl’s part, but the onlookers, who were natur-a-lly frantic with excitement, screamed in horror. The -stationmaster and- others ran 011 to the platform, but it was too Into; the ponderous engine had crushed the poor girl’s head to -a pulp, and ono arm, which with a oonvuls-ive movement was thrown across the lino, was severed near tho elbow, The body was taken to tho morgue ,bnt nothing that would reveal the girl’s identity could be found. She was apparently about nineteen years of age, of dark complexion and hair.
At the meeting of the Fire Brigade last night, the superintendent, in u few remarks, proposed a vote of congratulation to Foreman on his election >as president of the United Fire Brigades Association, which Was carried .with acclamation. Fireman Lapidge. the dolegute to the late conference at Masterton, also gave an interesting and exhaustive account of the ,proceedings, for which lie received 1 a hearty vote of thanks. During his yenm'JvS he said that in the opinion of the delegates at Mas* teuton itho visitors were hotter catered for than at any previous conference. A special meeting of the brigade will he held next Thursday,, to go into the revising of the rules, subsequent to the annual meeting, which takes place on April Ist. The superintendent reported thut the Borough Council has agreed to the appointment of five extra alien to .the brigade. AVhile discussing this the want of accommodation was refer red to, and Fireman iLapidgo mentioned that at Carterton the members of tile brigade (hud held a big fancy fair and bazaar, and from ithe proceeds built a splendid two-story room, and furnished' it- St- their own espouse.

The East Coast Mounted Rifles will parade to-day at 2.30 p.m. No 1 Troop at tlio Abattoirs, and No. 2 Troop at the Drillshed. A junction will afterwards be effected on the sandhills, when skirmishing work will bo indulged in.
At tlio Baptist Tabernacle last night the Rev. AV. Lamb delivered tho second of the series of lectures on “The Second Coming of the Lord,” tlio lecturer being listened to with interest ,the blackboard illustrations being especially appreciated. It is reported that tlio motor and cycle business of Messrs Roland and Co, Gladstone- Road, has been sold to Air AV. J. Barlow, of the motor and Cyclo Works, Peel street. Air Barlow took posssession of bis new works on Tuesday.
AVhen tlio Tuatea. left Gisborne last night thero were fully 200 Alaoris on board, proceeding to take part in the Maori demonstration in connection with the Napier Carnival. The effect was rather novel last night, when, as tlio Tuatea approached tlic Alanuka tin- natives on each vessel exchanged greetings.
One* of tho applicants for the secretaryship of the Greymouth Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, who -is a widower, stated in bis letter to the Board that if they wished the appointee lo bo a married mail, he would, if lie received tho position, guarantee to take unto himself a partner in life within a. reasonable time.

Thomas Quinn, a charge of assault, was railed- on at the Police Court yesterday Sergeant Williams -asked for a :omand on the ground that- the chief witness, the man -who had been assaulted, had- left the town, although lie bad been served with, a subpaona. Air -Bright, -who appeared for defenilmt, said Jie hail intended asking for a. remand -as his client -was at piesent- laid up in a -private hospital. A remand for a -week was granted.
Air. H. Sandlant, who recently disposed of liis tailoring business, does not intend to leave Gisborne, and lias, acting in conjunction with Air. G. \A’. McMillan, purchased Air. C. 11. DoLautour’s agricultural implement and machinery agency. Mr. _ McMillan lias lately been managing the business, and the new firm will be carried on under tlio title of Sandland and Co. The firm holds the sole agencies for the Burgon sheep-shear-ing machines, Austral milking machines, and a number of oil anil gas engines of up-to-date makes.
Tho “Lqbor Journal” for Alarcli, which came to hand yesterday, states that the building trailo in Gisborne is still very active—carpenters, painters and plumbers being wanted—employers experiencing difficulty in getting good men. The furniture trade is reported brisk, with cabinet-makers in demand. Tho engineering, clothing, and boot- trades are -also reported as busy, and hands are wanted in various departments. The saddle and harness making trade is said to be normal, while there is a fair demand for unskilled labor throughout the district.
