WOULD-BE RESCUER DROWNED
An unfortunate episode, in which the would-be rescuer lost liis lile, while the endangered man was saved, occurred recently in Sydney harbor. William, Steele, an A. 8., belonging to the timber barquentino Alexa, was returning to liis ship about 11.15 p.m. Apparently in attempting to board the vessel he missed liis footing and fell in. Thomas AVliito, tho cook, hearing tho splash and cries for help, plunged in to Steele’s _ assistance. Steele was secured by his shipmates all right, but meanwhile AVliito had disappeared, his body being recovered next morning. AA’hito, who was 50 years of age, was a colored man, and a native of Liverpool, England. He was well liked on hoard, and the sad nature of liis death, while endeavoring to save a fellow seaman, was strongly felt by his shhunates.
