THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF GISBORNE.

ANOTHER DESPERATE CONTEST

MARGOLTOUTH WRESTS THE HONORS FROM THE VETERAN, BARLOW.

On Saturday afternoon C. Margolioutli and AV. S. Barlow ' resumed their contest at. the Haiti courts for the Huwley Cup, which carries with it the local championship j and after a stirring contest, which ran the full five sets, Margoliouth succeeded where so many have failed, and downed the former champion. Like the Uncompleted match of a few weeks ago,, it was a memorable, struggle, in which the excitement of the spectators was never allowed to flag. In the end, the old adage, “Youth .will be served,” once more received justification, and Barlow, whose presence at the opposite side of the net has struck dismay into the hearts of numerous would-be champions, had Ut last to strike his colors to one who is many years his junior. There was little "that was brilliant in the play, but from start to finish there was apparent a dogged determination to light for every stroke, and the manner of the contest nrade powers of endurance a special factor. In tbo first set Barlow showed himself in his best form, and delighted his supporters by the vigor and accuracy of his play. He lobbed to perfection, and running up to the net placed his balls so- well that lie had his opponent constantly running. Margoliouth made tin excellent showing, but Barlow was always a shade too good, and his forceful tactics gave him the first set by 6 gameto love. In the second Barlow slowed down a hit, and this gave Margoliouth .an opportunity that he took full advantage of. Playing Barlow at his own game, Margoliouth quickly showed that he still had to be reckoned with. He dkl not drive so much as in the first match, but he placed more accurately, whilst liis over-head work was excellent, and at lobbing, which lie employed frequently, be was little inferior to Barlow. In this set every game was stubbornly fought out, and Margoliouth only won at 7-5. The third was Margoliouth’s sot from the commencement, and towards the finish Barlow’s play had suffered so much by comparison that tile match seemed a foregone conclusion for the younger contestant, lie won rather easily at 6-2. Margoliouth commenced the fourth set by securing a handy lead at 3-1, hut at this stage the former champion once more put in a, claim. The strain was obviously tolling oil both, players, and Barlow, bringing all his generalship into play, commenced once more to dominate the situation. Ho played the waiting game, and with his opponent too tired to smash, quickly oiled u» the points, and ran out a winner, taking 4 games in succession, and the game at 6-3. In the* final set Barlow endeavored to forco the p!av, and in so doing lound the not frequently, whilst Margoliouth, by careful tactics, vaned by .a n occasional smart volley, had sligluly the better of the rallies. There va--, however, still little between the tuo pi a vers, and the score went up to 3 all before either could claim an advantage. At this Margoliouth, by good overhead work and well-judged shots, secured a lead, and giving Barlow little onportunity to. retrieve the position, took the remainder ot the games, and the set, the match thus ending in liis favor:-0-6, 3-6, 6-3. It will be noticed that each player won. 22 games. Both winner and loser were heartily apulauded bv the soectators lor the sterling exhibition given. At. the conclusion Air AV. J. H.nvlov, donor ot the cup, who also acted as umpire, presentee! the trophy to the winner.
