TOLOGA BAY MEETING. SECU-ND DAY. There was splendid- weather for the second day of the Tologa Bay Jockey Club’s annual meeting on Saturday. The two oil launches, Hauiti and Iranui, took large numbers up the river to the course, and the coaches were well patronised. The attendance was a record for the meeting, and must have been gratifying to the stewards, aud especially to Air. AV. E. Holder, the Iron, secretary, who had all the arrangements in perfect order. The sum of £3460 was put through the totalisator, making’a total of £6389 for the meeting:- The Hauiti Brass Band added greatly to the enjoyment of the proceedings by playing selections at frequent intervals during the day. Tlie catering, in the hands of Air.'Morgan, was all that could bedesired, and the light refreshment booth did. a brisk trade owing to the excessive heat- in tlie afternoon. Quite a number of protests were entered, during tho day, and the stewards, spent the greater part of the afternoon in their room adjudicating upon these. The majority were of a frivolous nature, and were dismissed. The bookmakers again did good business. The following were the results: SECOND HANDICAP HURDLES, of 30 sovs; second horse 5 sovs. Over six flights of hurdles.—lJ miles. E. J. ‘Williams’ Te Rahui, 12.9 (Jones) .' 1 G. B. Oman’s Earmark, 10.5 (Adams) .1 2 Also started: Spunyarn 9.6 (Murray).
Earmark and Te Rahui got quickly off the mark, and went well away from Spunyarn. Earmark was first over the hurd/le, and led by about eight lengths passing the stand, with ’ Spuuyarn ten lengths in the rear. At the back of the course Te Rahui and ‘ Spunyarn moved up, and a fine race " ensued round the bend. Te Rahui gradually forged ahead, and taking the jump cleanly got a length’s advantage. Spunyarn came down heavily at the last hurdle, but the jockey escaped without injury. A fine finish down the straight resulted in Te Rahui winning by a length. Time, 2min 59sec.
(SECOND AIAIDEN SCURRY*. 25 soys ; minimum weight 7st 71b. —5 furlongs. A. Clements’ Torona (41b OTer) (AVoon) 1 W. C. Walsh’s Munga Alotio (91b over) (Ahurray) 2 Air. AVells’ Ilby (61b over (Parramore) 3 Also ran: Awauui (Porter). Torona showed up prominently- from the start, and led all the way. On entering the straight, Ilby, who bad been running last, moved up and displaced Awanui for third place. Toroua won easily by three and a half lengths from Alunga Alotio, with Ilby four lengths away third. Time, Inlin ssec. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, of 40 sovs; second horse 5 sovs.—7 furlongs. Air. F. E. Loomb’s Pluck, 8.0 (Porter) i Air. H. J. Lougher’s Marangai, 9.9 (Porter) 2 J. A. Caesar’s Alartyr King; ’ v. 7, and 51b oyer (Broadfield)... 3 Also fan: Stylish, 7.9 (Lindsay). ' Stylish got. a bad start, and Pluck made the running. At the back 'of the course Pluck had a length’s advantage, Alarangai and Stvlish being next m order. At the bend Stylish moved up to Alarangai, but Pluck came in, hard hold, ail easy winner by two lengths. Marangai ‘left Stylish in the straight, and ran into second place Half a dozen lengths ahead of the light-weight. Time, Imin 35sec. As the race was started three minutes before the advertised time, through the starter’s watch and the official clock on the totalisator not having been compared, a- meeting of the stewards was called, and the race declared void, and ordered to he run. over again after the Hauiti Jlandicap. It. was explained that the official clock had gained time, and had been regulated in the morning, hut the starter had not been advised of tho change, and had not checked his time by the clock, as the time corresponded on the first day. The run-off resulted: : — Pluck ] Alarangai 2 Alartyr King 3 Stylish was scratched. Pluck went to the front, and again led all the way, winning as he liked by four lengths from Alarangai, with Alartvr King two lengths away. Time. Imin. oosee.
Some doubt existed as to whether the machine could he opened again when the race was run over a second time. As .there was a conflict of opinion on> the point among the stewards it was decided not to reopen the machine, and the money oil Stylish was returned. HAUITI HANDICAP, of 40 sovs; second horse 10 sovs.—6 furlongs. A. Clements’ Torona, 8.0 (AV0011)... 1 Air. Dixon’s Aiahurangi, 8.3 ■ (Broadfield) 1 2 E. C. Torona shot- to the front and led along the back of the course, with Awanui and Aiahurangi in close attendance. A good finish was fought out m the straight between these three, but Torona had too much pace, and won comfortably by two lengths from Aiahurangi, Awanui being a good third. Time, Imin 21sec. Protests wero entered against Torona by the owners of the second and third horses, on tho grounds that the horse had not been trained in the dis-
trict, according to the conditions at*
, , ~ , ~„C Ol and that the horse wfmLie outside tho district without ihad ?. since December 12th last, At P tho meeting of tho stewards, Mr. filaments nroduced evidence time, the only time'the horse went out of the district was to run in a race at Gisborno, and that on that occasion Torona had been taken down and brought back from Gisborno the same day.
