FIRST BALLOT UNDER THE NEAV ACT.

The first ballot under tho neav Land Laaa-s Amendment Act avas heild at the Auckland Lands office this afternoon. Tho Commissioner, Air. McKenzie, said that this avas the first important ballot under the neav Act, -and tho applicants avere all landless. Ho looked" upon this ballot as entirely one for landless people, and only those avlio really needed land wouSd get it. As they knew, the ballot had been postponed to alloav the authorities to discover which applicants avere entitled to preference, oil the grounds of being landless. Out of 21 applicants for one section no less than 16 had been thrown out because they already possessed land, thus leaving only "five genuinely landless applicants. " Out of over 500 who had put in for the different sections, there had only been one objection raised to the postponement of tho ballot. The ballot was then proceeded avith.
